The Environment as the Third Teacher: Intentional Spaces that Evolve with Children

How can a classroom become more than just a backdrop for learning? How can an environment truly act as a “third teacher,” and what does that look like in practice? In this session, Vicky de la Garza, Lower School Atelierista at the Advent School in Boston, will share the story of her Atelier and how intentional design choices shape a space that sparks curiosity, creativity, and collaboration. Participants will explore how materials, documentation, and flexible arrangements work together to support emergent projects and make children’s ideas visible, while also considering how these Reggio-inspired practices and ideas can be applied to any learning setting. Let’s explore how our environments can grow and transform with children’s questions and interests, becoming living spaces that reflect their voices, ideas, and discoveries.
