We Take Care of Each Other: Care and Cooperation in Early Childhood Settings

The origins of the Reggio Emilia approach followed a rich history of a community coming together to create something positive in response to oppression. In the United States, we often focus on the image of the child as an active participant in their learning, but democracy is fundamental to the Reggio approach. Learning is a group process where all participants–children, families, and educators–are equals. This partly stems from the idea that learning is simply academics, but care is as integral to learning as anything else.

The phrase “we take care of each other” is a practice of everyday life but also a call to action. In this keynote, Mike Huber explores how daily nurturing of care and cooperation in group settings can foster strong communities while also planting the seeds for a Beloved Community that is more peaceful, humane, sustainable and just.

Documentation as an authentic assesment and communication tool

“Documentation is not about what we do but what we are searching for.” ~Carla Rinaldi

Using the Doc Lab protocol we will practice looking at documentation, analyze the learning together and wonder what steps could take place next. Participants with traces are encouraged to bring them, although this is not required.

We will be using the developed protocol.

Teaching With The Body In Mind:A dialogue about supporting children’s essential need to move in order to learn by examining that movement through different social roles.

How do children make sense of the world? First and foremost, they learn through their bodies. However, we often teach children to disconnect from their bodies by asking them to “sit still” or “keep your hands to yourself.” Research shows that young children learn best when using their whole body. In fact, some learning cannot happen until the child has mastered some level of sophisticated movements with their body. While watching videos of children in motion, participants will be asked to examine their own assumptions about whether or not movement leads to “learning” (including topics related to rough-and-tumble play, risk-taking, and aggression) through the lens/roles as the child, as the teacher, and as a parent/primary caregiver.
